Kitchen cabinet hardware: 5 things to consider for your kitchen

When it comes to designing kitchens, the majority of the focus typically revolves around the function. But once the function has been all planned out, then it’s time to turn that function into a pretty functional space. When it comes to kitchen cabinet hardware, there are 5 key areas that I help my clients with.

Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Cabinet hardware can totally make or break a space, in my opinion. There are 5 areas that I start with when discussing hardware for kitchen cabinets.

  1. Types/Options
  2. Style
  3. Size
  4. Finish
  5. Comfort

Types and Options

There are many types and options of kitchen cabinet hardware.

  • Pulls
  • Knobs
  • Cup Pulls
  • Latches
  • Integrated handles
  • Hidden pull

Just as with types of hardware, there are also different styles.

  • Traditional
  • Contemporary
  • Transitional

When it comes to anything design related, size matters! Function, proportion, aesthetics all come into play when considering sizing of kitchen cabinet hardware. For all of my projects, I go to great length to ensure the correct sizes are purchased.

Cabinet Pulls

While there are really no real ‘rules’, I do like to use the 1/3rd rule for cabinet pulls. For example, if your drawer is 24″ wide, then I divide that by 3 to get a rough length (which is 8″ long).

Porch Daydreamer has a great visual for sizing that you can also use as a guide.

When you consider your kitchen in the ‘big picture’, the finish of your cabinet hardware will also play a role. Some of the more popular finishes we have used are

While many don’t really think of this, it really is important that the end user be comfortable with the cabinet hardware. Just as with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, you want cabinet hardware to be just right. Nothing too big, nothing too small, but j-u-s-t right for your hands.

For more detailed information on all of the above, I have created a little e-book to help guide you with your decisions. I hope you will find it handy and helpful when you are looking to choose new kitchen cabinet hardware for your new build or your kitchen renovation project.
