The Power of Painting Kitchen Cabinets |See this transformation

Painting kitchen cabinets can have a very powerful effect on a space. And while we have had previous projects where we have painted cabinets, this transformation is quite spectacular.

The Wish

I received a call in June to assist this family and their home. Last year, I had helped with their exterior choices and I was thrilled to be back to help out with the interior.

For my clients, being new to the empty nester life, the thought of potentially selling their home within the next five years is very plausible. After looking what was comparable in the real estate market, and speaking with a real estate agent, we had a number of items on the list.

  • painting the kitchen cabinets
  • paint the interior doors on the main floor
  • remove the popcorn ceiling and change to a flat ceiling on the second story
  • replace some of the lighting fixtures
  • repaint the feature walls on the main floor and master bedroom
  • replace all of the existing laminate
  • replace the carpet up the stairs and in the master bedroom
  • slate floors were kept in the front foyer

BEFORE: The old laminate flooring was just removed prior to this picture being taken. The green feature wall was going to change.

After reviewing the investment, I was happy to report we were able to give them everything on their wish list.

The Plan

Coming up with the Construction Calendar is always a fun task for me. For this project, we followed the timeline below.

  • Demo
  • Drywall
  • Painting kitchen cabinets, feature walls, and the entire second story.
  • Floor Install
  • Finishing Work
  • Paint Touch Ups
  • Electrical
  • Final walkthrough

Choosing the Paint

My clients had recently had their home painted. While they loved their main wall colour, the green accent colour was a bit of a miss. In addition, we needed to chose a cabinet colour that worked well with their existing granite and subway tile. Here is the colour scheme we came up with.

Timeline of the Work

I would love for you to guess the timeline we created for this project. Do you think it took us 4 weeks? 5 weeks? More?

Painting

For the painting of kitchen cabinets, the interior doors, feature walls on the main floor, the entire upstairs (including the new flat ceilings), our painter had three weeks in our calendar.

It is important to note here that our clients lived through this renovation. They really helped us out by moving all of the furniture out of the main floor and second story (they had a storage bin on their driveway). They stayed in the basement guest bedroom and were very patient living through this.

Flooring

For this project, we chose a Luxury Vinyl Plank floor for a number of reasons.

  1. This family has two dogs and a Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring is super durable for pets.
  2. The location of this home is in a family-friendly neighbourhood. If and when my clients choose to sell their home, it will most likely get sold to a family with small children.
  3. It looks fabulous and worked very nicely with the existing slate we were keeping along with the stone around the fireplace.

Progress: New LVP alongside the existing slate floor.

In total, we had a 6 week timeline to go from old to new!

The End Result

This transformation was amazing to see. What was once a dated home is now fresh. While we chose white for the cabinets (as white kitchens are still a hot seller), this home feels so warm and inviting.

So…what do you think?

Take Aways

While many of our projects deal with moving walls and opening up spaces, a number of our projects are also similar to this one. By updating paint colours, flooring, and some lighting fixtures, a home can take on a major transformation and look and feel like a brand new home.
