White Kitchens are NOT boring!
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to take part in the Calgary Home + Design Show. The big draw this time was Brian and Sarah Baeumler. Although I didn’t get a chance to hear either talk, I heard they were very funny!
This was the area that I was in and that was called ‘Ask An Expert‘. I had such a great two days – answering questions, giving advice, and meeting so many great people. You could say that is one part of my job that I really enjoy – meeting so many great people!
Right across from our area there was a kitchen cabinet company (which shall remain nameless). As I love to people watch and my next appointment hadn’t arrived, I took in (notice how I don’t say I was staring) how the kitchen cabinet company was interacting with potential new clients. It was during this time that I heard one of the sales men say, “Those designers – all they want to do is put in white kitchens. They are so boring.”
White Kitchens are NOT Boring
I’m here to tell you, in my honest opinion, that white kitchens are not boring. Here are my top 3 reasons why they are not:
White Kitchens are NOT Boring – Reason 1
If you were to install a white kitchen, you are really creating a foundation to decorate around any colour possible!
Carla Aston, Designer | Colleen Scott, Photographer
This kitchen, designed by my friend Carla Aston, used a gorgeous blue backsplash tile. In addition, you can see from the styling that it will be easy for Carla’s client to add in a number of different accent colours throughout the years. How pretty do the sunflowers and tulips looks?
Laura Muller, Designer | Cliff Muller, Contractor | FourPoint Design & Build
This kitchen, designed by my other good friend, Laura Muller is all white. You can see by this image that adding in ANY colour will be easy to do.
White Kitchens are NOT Boring – Reason 2
White kitchens, in my opinion, are timeless. I’ve see the dark brown espresso cabinets come and almost go, grey is here but won’t stay. White on the other hand? Timeless! Don’t believe me? Just take a look at all the white kitchens that you can find online. Are there any (when done properly) that you can guess when there were installed? While the backsplash may give it away, if you were to just look at the cabinetry, you may have a hard time distinguishing when they were installed.

Any guesses as to when this kitchen was installed? Maria redid her kitchen in 2013! Yes – this was installed 7 years ago.
White Kitchens are NOT Boring – Reason 3
Not only are white kitchens timeless and you can decorate with virtually any colour, they are fresh! Nothing says fresh more than white. Think of hotel rooms that have crisp white bed sheets with a splash of colour.
Hotels know what they’re doing when they use white bedsheets. According to DesignLike:
“Use the psychological effects of color of white to create a refreshing and clean look in your home. People associate different things in white. White is used to create an airy appearance, quiet and pure.”
White Kitchens are NOT Boring – So there!
As I mentioned at the start of this post, I was at the Calgary Home + Design Show this past weekend. In the next couple of weeks, I will be visiting 5 homes that have set up consultations with me to go over their kitchens. Guess what? They all want white! Guess what?
As you have shown, you can have almost any colour accents, or wood colours with white as a base – same for black really, but white gives a light open feel so you can accept with very dark colours and it doesn’t look too dark. All white could be a bit boring, but not this. 🙂
This was a very helpful post, It was well-written and contained sound, practical advice.
Yes , some white kitchen are not boring which have big space and in which the things are properly arranged.
But there is a problem.
They all starting to look the same.
White cabinets, white marble counters, white mouldings and walls , white freezers.
So, if you have done with your kitchen all things in white and lot it !!
No problem ,,, just relax and you dis a great job!
just relax !! Add some flavour, add some spice or colourful things and make it yours
I’m not sure I agree with you and your comment of all white kitchens starting to look the same. At least, not where I am. There are over 140 different shades of white. From the starkest of white to very creamy white – they all bring something to the table. Creamy white cabinets will never go with a white marble counter. I find that my clients are looking for a fresh and clean look that will stand the test of time (with trends). White is the colour to go with if that is your mission. Changing paint colours and decor is way easier than changing cabinets and counters every 10 years.
